Robert B. Finkelman教授是医学地质的主要创始人，曾任职于美国地质调查局（USGS），现任美国德州大学达拉斯分校（University of Texas at Dallas）地球科学系教授。长期在美国地调局从事煤中微量元素，煤地质，医学地质等方面的科研工作，是国际著名的煤地质学专家，在国际重要刊物上发表400多篇第一作者论文。在第33届地质大会他担任煤地质学会主席，现担任国际煤地质等多个学术刊物的编委，国际医学地质学会主席。

研究课题：
1. 主要是针对煤炭对健康的影响，正在研究Lignite-Water syndrome - analogous to BEN. 开发有关黑肺病和不受控制的煤火的项目。与中国矿业大学的同事们一起研究中国煤炭的特征，评估其对环境和健康的影响。
