Irena Kostova 1999年毕业于保加利亚科学院，获得地质学博士学位。现为保加利亚索菲亚大学(Sofia University)地质与地理系教授，是International Journal of Coal Geology编委(2008-2015)，Energy Exploration & Exploitation编委（2011年至今），主要从事煤及其燃烧产物中有害元素的环境影响的教学与研究，多集中在热电厂煤和飞灰样品中挥发性有害元素汞及其有机化合物、煤的生物标志物及有机有害物质多环芳烃（PAHs）的组成特征等方面，创造性将有机岩石学方法应用于燃煤过程中有害物质的环境污染评价，发表国际学术论文60多篇，在国际上有较大学术影响力。
