Colin Ward获得博士学位后一直从事于科研与教学工作，是国际煤地质学领域的著名科学家。在1975年伊利诺斯州地质调查局休假期间研究了煤中矿物学知识，1984年重返新南威尔士大学(UNSW)并任职，之后对沉积学、矿物学进行了更深层次的研究，后重点发展了x射线衍射作为矿物学评价的定量工具。同时还担任International Journal of Coal Geology编委，并获Ralph J. Gray奖(2011)、Dalway Swaine奖(2017)。至今Colin编写多本著作，在International Journal of Coal Geology、Fuel、Energy等顶级期刊上发表百余篇文章，对煤地质学、煤中矿物研究有着重要的贡献。
